What is GIAS?

Get Information About Schools (GIAS) is a public website used by teachers, parents, and others to find key information about schools and trusts. This includes:

  • Special Educational Needs (SEN) details
  • Opening dates
  • Pupil capacity
  • Contact details
  • Governance and leadership information
  • Trust characteristics

Schools are responsible for keeping their GIAS records up to date. Updates are made via DfE Sign-in.

Common enquiries

  1. How do I update GIAS?
  2. What is the process for making a significant change?
  3. Why did I/my colleague receive the latest DfE Update

1. How do I update GIAS?

Schools can update their records by logging into the GIAS website via DfE Sign-in.

Helpful advice and tips for updating individual or bulk records are available in the guidance and FAQ pages.

Note: Some changes may require DfE approval. If you're unable to make a change, contact support with your organisation name, UKPRN and details of the changes you wish to make.

2. What is the process for making a significant change?

To make a significant change (e.g. school name, governance structure), follow the significant change process.

3. Why did I/my colleague receive the latest DfE Update?

The DfE Update is sent to the following roles as listed on GIAS:

  • Headteacher
  • Accounting Officer
  • Chief Financial Officer
  • Chair of Trustees

You can share the Update with colleagues. They can also register for web alerts to receive email notifications when new editions are published on GOV.UK.
