Apprentice temporarily without line manager

Created

Hello all,

We have a learner whose line manager very sadly recently passed away. The employer hasn't put a new line manager in place yet and so, although the learner is prepared to continue with their learning, there isn't currently a line manager in place to attend progress reviews or provide supporting witness testimony to evidence learning being put into practice. We feel this is, understandably, having an impact on the learner's progress, but we're also unsure of how long it's acceptable for a learner to go without a line manager.

Should we be putting this learner on a Break in Learning until a line manager is in place?

Thanks in advance for any advice you might have.

Heather

There isn’t really a specific “this is how long they can go without a line manager” benchmark, but if you’re noticing and can articulate that it’s having an impact on the learner’s progress then you’re perfectly entitled to suggest a break in learning until one is instated. Have you raised these concerns with the employer? Spoken to the apprentice?

Thanks for that, Ben - a BIL does seems sensible. We wanted to find out more before discussing with the learner and employer, but will liaise with both and, if a new line manager isn't expected to be assigned imminently, we will suggest this to support the learner.
