Asylum Seekers in receipt of weekly destitution allowance

Created

Hi

We have a few new asylum seekers in initial accommodation that don't have an aspen card but instead receive a weekly destitution allowance. Should this be treated as a benefit for full funding?

If anyone has any advice that would be great.

Thanks

Ah, rather depends how "new" they are? No funding for the first six months anyway.

Then we have the somewhat Kafka-esque status of Asylum Seekers. It was confirmed by the Agency that the money they receive is "a state benefit", however, as they are not allowed to work, they do not meet the definition of "unemployed" because they cannot work. So, outside of the MCAs who are explicitly fully funding Asylum Seekers (London, Cambridgeshire & Peterborough and some courses in Greater Manchester, to the best of my knowledge), they can't really be fully funded...

Thanks Steve, they are 6 months plus so can be co-funded, I don't know where now but I thought I saw somewhere that Aspen payments counted as state benefits and wasn't sure about these payments, I hadn't considered that they wouldn't be counted as unemployed in any case.
