BIL - Return to Learning

Hi all,

I am after some advice about an apprentice who is returning to learning after BIL (this is the first time we have actioned this process and I am keen to get ahead of any issues).

  • When a learner restarts their apprenticeship, do they need to do some 'new learning' on their restart date (similar to the original start date of the apprenticeship) and if so, what kind of examples do organisations usually do for this?
  • We usually run 1 live session (webinar) per module, however, for returning learners, the learning plan will be out of sync with those learners who have not had a BIL, is there any suggestions for what is best to do here? Or is it as simple as making amendments for those returning learners on a case-by-case basis?

Thanks in advance for any help and if anyone has any other advice about returning learners, please do feel free to share!

Kind regards,

Tom

Yes there needs to be evidence of learning on their return Learning Start Date, though technically this can be accurate to within a week, providing the allowance doesn't take the date into a different month as that will affect funding calculations.

Yes, you'll have to individualize their training/learning plan to accommodate the break and this should be done on a case-by-case basis. How you do this is up to you/the apprentice/the employer.

Yes, you need to evidence learning on the restart date. It can be any eligible learning activity that counts towards their OTJ training plan (or English/maths as per the funding rules).

In terms of being out of sync, you'd need to decide internally how you want to deal with this and then update the training plan. There's no guidance in the funding rules other than that you should replan delivery and extend the duration accordingly.

the funding rules are clear on page 40 for 'new learning' OHJT https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/653b726de6c9680014aa9c05/Apprenticeship_funding_rules_2324_Version_2.pdf

Specifically Point 71.

What can be included?

  1. The provider must ensure that off-the-job training delivers new skills that are directly relevant to the apprenticeship standard. Off-the-job training can include:

71.1. The teaching of theory (e.g. lectures, role playing, simulation exercises, online learning and manufacturer training);

71.2. Practical training (e.g. shadowing, mentoring, industry visits and participation in competitions);

71.3. Learning support;

71.4. Time spent writing assignments; and

71.5. Revision (where this is specifically required for achievement of the apprenticeship)
