GCSE Certificates - Name Change

Created

None

Hi all,

We have a learner who's name on their GCSE certificates do not match their current name. For reference, this learner shall be called 'Firstname Surname', and their passport and driving licence shows 'Firstname Surname'. When she was young, her mother remarried and unofficially added a second name to their surname, therefore the learner adopted "Firstname NewSurname-Surname". They used this name to enrol her into school therefore her GCSE certs show "Firstname NewSurname-Surname" and therefore does not match her ID. The learner has since dropped the New Surname and uses their original "Firstname Surname" name.

Is there anything we can do to avoid the learner retaking Functional Skills?

Thank you in advance.

I have encountered this a few times, the learner would need proof of name change such as deed pole cert. If you contact the EPAO and send the information across, the quality team will be able to advise you what to do best. Another option could be to re apply for GCSE certificates under the original name if this is on the birth certificate.

One would hope the EPAO would be able to see sense here, as it's clearly the same person? Having said that, if the name change was never "official" (aside: you can call yourself whatever you want, there's no law against it!), getting reissued certs is probably going to help the learner in the long-run, not just for this.
