New OTJ Calculator

Created

None

Hi,

I am checking the otj calculator we use in excel against the new otj calculator published by the ESFA recently and notice for the same dates SD 01/08/2023 and PED 01/08/2025 our excel spreadsheet calculates 731 days duration but the ESFA one says 732. It is nothing to do with the leap year in 2024 as if I use SD 01/08/2024 and 01/08/2026 the ESFA's calculator still gives 1 day more duration.

Very confused....

Regards,

Alison

Hi Alison,

I would say that the ESFA calculation is the correct one, as both the start date and the end date are training days. So an excel date calculation is PED +1 - SD. Check the calculations by putting the Start date as 01/08/23 and the Expected end date as 02/08/2023. Clearly two days; your spreadsheet will give one, the ESFA will give two.

Agree with Martin, the ESFAs template is correct. Excel interprets dates as whole numbers to allow for calculations, starting from 1/1/1900 which is recognises as ‘1’, and continuing from there. If you don’t add 1 to the date calculation, you miss out on the final full day.
