Employers with multiple ERNs at the same address?

Created

I am trying to determine which ERN to use for one of the employers using our apprenticeship, but they have multiple ERNs listed at the same address, under slightly different names. To complicate things further, the DAS account the employer is using does not line up with any of the listed entries (names do not exactly match, but it is clear they are the same company). The people I am in contact with at the employer do not seem to know which ERN is the relevant one. If they are all at the same address, can I just pick one?

What are you using ERNs on Apps for in 2024?

ILR Specification 2024 to 2025: Field: Employer Identifier

  • From 1 April 2022, new Employer Identifier numbers are no longer issued. Please use a value of 999999999 where the employer does not exist on the Employer Data Service. There is no longer a requirement to update this within 60 days.

I'd just be 999999999ing everyone, particularly anyone new...

Hi Steve,

I had been told that if there was an ERN available on the Employer Data Service we should be using it. My issue is that there are 5-6 possible ERNs which all bear the employer's name (all slightly different) and address.

If this a total non-issue and 999999999 would be acceptable in this instance, I am more than happy to be corrected.

I am 99.5% certain that literally nothing happens to it for any new starts because all the employer data is linked via AS and the PAYE schemes there, rather than via the ERN. Is only the last dregs* of contracted provision (pre-non-levy being on AS) where it could be useful.

*Interestingly, yesterday's allocations release shows there are still 367 providers with contracted allocations which seems a little high...
