In-Year GCSE Grade Update

Created

None

Hi,
We have a number of 16-19 year olds who sat their GCSEs in November, and achieved below a grade 4. I previously read somewhere that in-year GCSE grades should not be updated on the ILR and should only be updated at the start of the teaching year. These learners are hoping to re-sit again in May. Any idea where this article might be available, as it would be good to share this with our Exams department. Thanks

So, two separate things. There's the grades when they arrive which go in:

ILR Specification 2024 to 2025: Field: GCSE maths qualification grade

ILR Specification 2024 to 2025: Field: GCSE English qualification grade

and should reflect what they have at the start of the year.

And then, if they are doing GCSE with you and resit in November and then stop because they've got a 4+, then you complete them early. If they don't get a 4+ in November then you just leave them open until the May/June exams.

Thanks Steve for your quick response

Just to be clear, I am referring to the 'Outcome Grade' field. Not sure if the same rules apply to that, as they would to a 'GCSE maths qualification grade Field'

Right, you don't fill that in until they complete though. If they're still in class because they're going to do the May exam set as well, then you wouldn't complete the record yet.

(I *suppose* you *could* have a situation where someone got a 4 in November but wanted to try for a 5 or 6 in May. If they then bombed out and only got a 3, I'd totally record the November 4, even though they'd have a May end date (because they attended all the way through))
