Temporary absences from the UK

Hi we have an apprentice applicant (UK resident) who went backpacking from Feb 23 to June 24 - does this constitute a break in the 3 year qualifying period or does this still count towards their qualifying period?
Only asking as i'm confused by the way the funding rules are worded as they state "should be considered ordinarily resident in the UK for the purposes of assessing eligibility for apprenticeship funding upon their return to the UK".
thanks
Tracey

Yes, this is almost the canonical example of someone who remains Ordinarily Resident. They went abroad but always intended to come back so it has no impact on their three years.
