BIL & Exam resit

Created

Good afternoon all,

It’s been brought to my attention by the team that a Finance student who went on a BIL and returned to L4 recently has completed some professional exams during her break. Looking back on the emails, the PD advised that they should attain their professional exams before rejoining and I wanted to check in on this, as my understanding is that students should not be engaging or carrying out any activity linked to their apprenticeship during a BIL.

I've looked through the funding rules and according to the UK Apprenticeship Funding Rules (2025–2026), apprentices must not engage in any apprenticeship-related training or assessment activities during a Break in Learning (BIL). This includes professional exams that are part of the apprenticeship programme.

If a student/employer fund and book the exam themselves during a BIL, would this breach funding rules?
Has anyone come across this before?
Thanks all
