Adult learners recording their own attendance

Created

We are looking at attendance recording methods for adult learners, possibly using a system called TDS (the tap in system).  We currently have tutors marking electronic registers in class.

We have already agreed this is not acceptable for 16-19 as students, due to safeguarding issues.

My question is, for adult courses, considering we have to record first day learning as the start point, is it acceptable for adult students to use a 'tap-in' model?  I have checked the funding rules and cannot see anything that says we cant, just that there needs to be robust procedures in place.

Any thoughts or opinions on this?  Does anyone currently do this?

Conceptually, I don't think it would be a problem? Not a lot different from, eg, an Apprentice recording their OTJ on a system to my mind, so can't see an issue with it at audit.

Logistically, I worry about it a bit though, isn't it easier (cheaper?) for a tutor just to mark a register? What happens on the day the tap in system doesn't work? What happens when a learner forgets their card? It does sort of seem like a solution trying to find a problem, I'd argue registers aren't broke, so why are we trying to fix them?

Thanks Steve. I couldn't see anything in any of the DFE guidance.

Agreed with your points, I will raise them with my manager, we know what students are like for remembering ID cards etc.

We use the tap in system in our HE sector of the organisation, so think they are looking at rolling it out to FE adults, to improve the recording & monitoring of attendance.

Love a good electronic register, especially when we are carrying out fire evacuation drills.
