Traineeships - employer wanting to pay a contribution

Hi All, Can anyone shed any light as to what guidance you give employers when they are wanting to contribute allowance/travel to a learner who is on a Traineeship programme,  obviously these are not employed,  an employer is asking re putting them onto payroll.  .

Any advice would be appreciated - thanks

The employer (work placement) may support trainees with expenses such as transport and meals.

As a traineeship is a route into an apprenticeship the employer should consider this.

From Framework for Delivery Version 4 – March 2021

  1. Traineeship work placements are part of a course and there is no legal

requirement or expectation that trainees will be paid. Traineeships are exempt from the

National Minimum Wage regulations. However, employers can decide whether or not to

pay the trainee, and how much. Employers may also decide to pay for or contribute to the

student’s travel and subsistence costs.
