Yup, one of the bigger changes this year (although they claim it's a clarification).
Having said that, could argue there's a bunch of good reasons for still doing it for all, to spot gaps if it's a while since they did E&M to work into their main programme which I'm sure Ofsted would approve of, it's just no longer mandatory.

2026/27 - Initial Assessment - Maths/English
Created
Good afternoon,
We currently carry out BKSB Maths and English initial assessments with all apprentices during the enrolment/onboarding stage.
In the 2026/27 draft rules, it states:
"If the apprentice, at any age, already holds evidence of a suitable equivalent qualification or where the apprentice is aged 19+ and their employer does not agree for a standalone English and/or maths qualification to be included as part of the programme, there is no mandatory requirement for the provider to carry out any form of assessment at the initial assessment stage."
Could you please confirm whether my understanding is correct that only apprentices who are required to undertake Maths and/or English (including those who opt in) now need to complete the initial assessments, and that this requirement no longer applies to apprentices who are not undertaking Maths and/or English?
Thank you in advance!
