As no one else is understandably brave (or foolish) enough to answer this, here is my take. A "line manager" is "anyone" who has the authority to tell the apprentice they are doing something right or wrong and can "make" them change direction. They do not have to be on the PAYE they (the line manager) certainly can be a Director (they are employees also !). So an Apprentice Architectural Plasterer can be told what to do by a specialist outside contractor. This is sensible as the said contractor would have the necessary knowledge. Day to day timekeeping and use of PPE can supervised by other members of staff. In a similar vein someone who worked as a young persons community outreach worker and received payment as a charity was able to be an apprentice as they had trustees who supervised them. Accepting this structure, admittedly in extremis, would allow a College Principal to be an apprentice as they have a board of governors giving them direction and telling them where they went right or wrong.

Revisiting this one: I have raised this with the Helpdesk and after 6 weeks still escallated and no reply. Please can I have guidance as to the eligibility criteria requiring to be fulfilled for an apprentice line manager. Can the line manager be someone not on the same PAYE, can they be a Director receiving dividends, can they be a consultant ..... Any help would be appreciated
