Functional skills training during a break in learning

Greetings,

I wanted to find out if an apprentice could go through functional skills training during a break in learning. The apprentice is on an extended leave from work until further notice due to their personal circumstances.  The apprentice has already completed their main apprenticeship training before going on a BIL, and they want to complete their FS so they can attempt their EPA when their break ends.

Should they return to work before they attempt their FS training? Thanks

Hi Ernest,

If the apprentice is on a break, then the funding is paused. The apprentice should be carrying out any teaching or exams related to their apprenticeship if they are on a break. If you are drawing down funding for the functional skills, then my advice would be to return from the BIL to complete the functional skills. Even though the functional skills do not form part of the 20% OTJ training, they do form part of the funding of an apprenticeship.

I would always advise that to continue study of any part of the apprenticeship, come back off the BIL first.
