Care Leavers Bursary Payment

Hi, we have a 16year old who is still in care. Are they still entitled to the Care Leavers Bursary or is it only if they have left care?

Many thanks

Hi Mel,

I believe it only applies when they leave care as the funding rules state "You must have evidence that the apprentice is eligible for this payment before you claim or are funded for any associated additional payments for you or the employer. This must be a signed email or letter from a local authority appointed personal advisor confirming that the apprentice is a care leaver".

There isn't anything that I can see within the care leaver section that talks about someone been in Care currently.

Hope this helps

Hi Thank you, we did also think this but the paragraph P119 in the funding rules state 'Apprentices are eligible to receive a £1,000 bursary payment if they have been in the care of a UK local authority as defined in paragraph P111' and then reading P111, it states 'an eligible child -a young person who is 16 or 17 and who has been looked after by a UK local authority/health and social care trust for at least a period of 13 weeks since the age of 14, and who is still looked after.

So we wasn't sure!

Thank you
