Is the Work Experience aim needed for GCSE only learners?

Created

None

I have a 16 year old learner who has decided to leave their original study programme and just concentrate on their GCSE Maths and English (as they have yet to achieve 4 or higher), and the question has come up to whether or not we need to keep their Work Experience aim active. The learner is working 30 hours per week, so continuing with their GCSE aims is fine, but do we still need to keep the Work Experience aim active to fulfil Condition of Funding?

If a learner is working 30 Hrs/Wk. what’s the justification for a work experience aim?

Jess Reading

If the learner found there own job, you cannot record this as work experience on the ILR.

If they are only doing GCSE Maths & English, depending on how many planned hours you deliver those subjects in, they may fall below the COF threshold of 150 hours, so become irrelevant in that sense.

Why are you thinking that they won't fulfil the COF without the work experience aim?

I do take both of your points, and I wasn't expecting their actually work to be counted towards work experience (as this is for a salary and not education), but I wanted to check just in case it was one of those hidden ILR requirements. Thank you for your advice.

There is no *requirement* for any (non T Level) learner to do work experience where it isn't part of the reqs of their qualification.

Thanks Steve. It does appear obvious (now) that it is not required. I had to ask as I had been unable to find an answer elsewhere.

The answer is in the following where it is or for a work placement:

Eligible provision

  1. In the majority of cases young people should be enrolled either in learning which leads to:
  2. an external certificate offered by a regulated awarding organisation and approved on the ESFA list of qualifications approved for funding 14 to 19, or
  3. a substantial work placement to prepare them for progression to an apprenticeship or other employment
  4. or enrolled on a T Level

Thank you, Martin.
