Does DSA Funding count as double funding for apprenticeship?

Created

None

Hi,

Just seeing if anyone has had a similar case before - a candidate is looking to enrol who is currently on a student finance funded Open University Course. The candidate is willing to cancel student finance in order to enrol, and will be self funding the remainder of thier Open Uni course, along with likely deferring the last year until after the apprenticeship completion.

The caveat is that they also received DSA funding, and finding it difficult to pin down exact dates of when this funding was received/when it is active until. https://www.gov.uk/disabled-students-allowance-dsa

Does anyone have any experience of this type of funding? Not sure if it does cause a double funding issue, but if so, I imagine we will need to ensure that the payments are stopped/the duration it was for has passed.

Bit vague, but any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks!

Apprentices can't claim DSA. They would have to notify the SLC that they are no longer eligible for the funding.  However you can then claim support through the ILR to continue their support.

Thanks Helen, yep the candidate is aware they can no longer claim, I may have misinterpreted the DSA website page, I thought it meant the payments were yearly so that this candidate still could be under a years worth of 'live' payments (if that makes sense), but is it more a case that DSA funding is used 'as and whe'n a candidate needs it? So therefore stopping it should be fine to proceed?

Thanks again

I would assume so. maybe speak to DSA or your own Disability team and ask them
