Apprentice on zero hours contract

Created

Here's a query our apprenticeship programme team have posed - can an apprentice be on a zero hours contract on a peripatetic (effectively our own bank staff) if they commit to say a minimum of an 8 hour shift every week? Programme team are suggesting they can average the hours over the duration - they have already done 5 months at 40 hours, so if they now do 7 months at 8 hours that will be ok.
Comments on whether an apprentice can be on zero hours if they commit to a minimum number of hours and the duration is increased from planned end of October 2023 to May 2024 to reflect reduced hours....???

So this is someone that is already mid way through their apprenticeship, and is now looking to change from a 40hr/week contract to a zero hours contract?

It is Roz, having reread the guidance seems to be ok, I'm just nervous it won't work for apprentice or us and will end up in a mess. The joys of being MIS person and delivery team throw regular curve balls!

Yeah the guidance does specifically say zero hours contracts are fine, but it sounds like a bit of a pain to track exactly how many working hours the apprentice has done.
