could a students paid job count for their mandatory work experience for their course if it is relevant to the course? for example a H&SC care student works in a care home and wants to use this as 1/4 of the hours required for their course.

I'm sure the answer is no, but I can't actually find anything that says that. The closest I can find is:

Young people undertaking work experience or a work placement are not in employment and are therefore not entitled to the National Minimum Wage. We encourage but do not require employers to meet students’ expenses such as travel or meal costs.
