Which surname to use in the LMS - Marriage or passport name?

Created

Hi

We have a learner who got married a few years ago and has not changed their passport to their married name. They have enrolled on the programme under their maiden name.

The learner has provided their marriage certificate and is requesting that their name be changed on our LMS and on (D)AS to their married name. Which document does the name in the Learning Management System need to match; the name on the passport (used as the ID doc) or can the marriage certificate be used as it is a legal name document (providing it matches the nee surname given in the passport)?

Thanks,

The name needs to match what the student wants it to be. We are not obliged to see ID (though it's good practice), and in the UK, the definition of "legal name", is basically the one you use. It doesn't have to be on any official ID.

Marriage certificates are accepted by everyone for name changes, so I would definitely go about changing this student's name if they're provided that.

The name in the ILR needs to match the name on the Learner Records Service, so if you use the new name you should also update the LRS record as well.
