Conflict between Prior Learning and Current Ability

Created

Good afternoon,

I just wanted to check the below scenario with you: If a learner has achieved L2 Maths some time ago, but the initial assessment of their current ability shows their current level is well below this, is this still fundable or is better to put them through as non-fundable?

Kind regards, Matt

The only time we opted to claim funding for English/maths at a level they'd already achieved, it was because the student had had a brain injury, which set them back significantly. We felt that justified claiming the funding, but under normal circumstances we wouldn't.

Agree. If they've got the bit of paper they're exempt, thus you can't have the money even if it's in everyone's best interests to teach them some of the stuff again.

That's what I was thinking. Thanks Ruth

Thank you, Steve. You have both confirmed what I was thinking. What made me question this was that the rules do state that you must query any contradictory information with the learner if there is mismatch between the learner's self declaration of their prior attainment and the PLR, but that the PLR will not necessarily override the learner’s self-declaration. In this case it is their initial assessment conflicting with their confirmed prior attainment. Have a weekend both and enjoy the sun!
