Practical period end date

P46.1 The practical period begins on the learning start date and ends on the learning actual end date (this date is also known as the final day or the gateway).

The learning actual end date is defined as such;

When learning towards the apprenticeship is complete. This can include off-the-job training and English and maths. There must be evidence of learning on this day

The practical period end date would therefore be the date you could last evidence that learning took place, not necessarily when all requirements are 'completed', though I'll admit there may be discussion around semantics. You'd obviously wait until you were certain that everything had been completed sufficiently before recording the date on the ILR, but the date you use should still be the last date of actual learning.

The OTJ requirements are set out in the OTJ guidance:

15 The apprenticeship funding rules state that off-the-job training can include the following:

“The teaching of theory (for example: lectures, role playing, simulation exercises, online learning or manufacturer training),

“Practical training: shadowing, mentoring, industry visits and participation in competitions,

“Learning support and time spent writing assessments / assignments.

24 The apprenticeship funding rules state that off-the-job training does not include:

“Training to acquire knowledge, skills and behaviours that are not required in the standard or framework.

“Progress reviews or on-programme assessment required for an apprenticeship framework or standard,

“Training which takes place outside the apprentice’s normal working hours, or “English and maths (up to level 2) which is funded separately.”

From the above time preparing for an assessment is included in OTJ training whereas an actual assessment is excluded from OTJ training hours.

For the practical period end date, you include evidence from recorded OTJ training hours or maths/English delivery hours whichever is the latest.

The practical period end date may be before the Apprentice enters the gateway due to delays when assessments are concluded after actual training.
