Apprenticeship Wage

Created

Hi,

Another one from me.

If an apprentice was employed in September with a view to starting an apprenticeship, but due to unforeseen circumstances had a delayed enrolment. Can they be paid an apprentice wage from their employment start date? Or does it have to be from the apprenticeship start date?

Thanks in advance.

No, they can't be paid the apprentice wage if they're not officially on an apprenticeship yet. They can only choose to pay someone the apprentice rate as of their apprenticeship start date. Per the funding rules;

P34.1 Where the employer is using the apprentice rate of the national minimum wage, they must only do so from the apprenticeship start date (see paragraph P30) and not before. Apprentices over 19 who have completed the first year of their apprenticeship are entitled to at least the correct national minimum wage for their age.
